What type of tire is best for a trailer?
Special trailer service tires feature heavy-duty constructions and accommodate higher inflation pressures to provide the load capacity necessary to match many trailer applications and payloads. Their stiffer sidewalls help control sway for enhanced towing stability and they offer more bruise resistance than typical passenger tires. These heavy-duty, special purpose trailer tires are not meant for use on cars or trucks. Here are some general points to be considered:
Load Range: It is important to choose a tire that is designed to manage the weight of the trailer. Look for the load range rating on the tire to determine its maximum load capacity. This rating will range from C to E, with E being the highest load range.
Size: Make sure to choose the correct tire size for your trailer. The tire size will be listed on the sidewall of the tire and in the owner's manual of your trailer. As an example, a popular size will be 205 75R15.
Tread Pattern: The tread pattern on trailer tires is optimized for a quiet ride with deep grooves for hydroplaning resistance. The ribs are closely spaced and fairly solid for dependable highway tracking and stability.
No matter what trailer tires you choose, it is important to keep them properly inflated and to inspect them regularly for wear and tear. Among the brands offered by Tire Rack are Goodyear, Hankook, Maxxis, and PowerKing. If you are unsure which tires are right for you, call, email, or chat with our qualified professionals.
How much does the average trailer tire cost?
The average price of a trailer tire ranged from $100 and $200. The exact cost will vary widely depending on the size, type, brand, load range, tread pattern, and quality of the tire. Some high-end models using durable material as Kevlar will cost more than tires built with less strong materials. It is important to remember that the cost of installation, other fees, and taxes may add to the overall cost of a tire.
Is it OK to use truck tires on a trailer?
In general, it is not recommended to use truck tires on a trailer. While truck tires and trailer tires may look similar, they are designed and manufactured for different purposes and have distinctive characteristics. Trailer tires are built with stiffer sidewalls that provide greater stability, help prevent sway, and offer more bruise resistance, while truck tires have more flexible sidewalls that offer better shock absorption and handling on the road. Additionally, trailer tires are designed to manage vertical loads, while truck tires are built to withstand lateral forces. Using truck tires on a trailer can compromise the safety and performance of the trailer, potentially leading to handling issues, increased risk of blowouts, and other problems. It is important to use the appropriate tires for your trailer to ensure optimal performance, safety, and longevity.
